Water Quality Management
When water supply from New Sundarijal WTP and Melamchi Diversion Tunnel is increased, customer demands for water quality will become higher than now, and KUKL will be required to work to enhance its internal water quality management system.
This project will help KUKL create PDCA cycle for water quality management clarifying roles and responsibilities amoung Head Office and Branch Offices to improve drinking water quality at customer's side.

Toward providing clean and safety drinking water in Kathmandu
This project will implement basic training on water treatment and water quality control, and prepare the Standard Operationg Procedures (SOPs) under the following implementation policies.
- Capacity building through a combination of theoretical and practical training to understand the appropriate water treatment process.
- Clarification of responsibilities and roles of Head Office, Branch Offices and Laboratories to optimize water quality management.
- On-the-Job Training at New Sundarijal WTP and existing treatment plants
Roles and responsibilities of the related departments/sections in KUKL
This project will clarify the system that can realize sustainable and organizationally integrated water quality control.
Basic training of Jar Testing for optimal coagulation
On February 1st-4th, 2022, practical training on jar testing was conducted for KUKL staff at the Mahankalchaur Central Laboratory.
Jar testing is an essential process in determining the optimal amount of coagulant needed to remove turbidity from raw water.
In the future, it is necessary to accumulate data on raw water quality (turbidity) and optimal PAC injection rates for each WTP, and create a correlation chart between turbidity and PAC injection rates for inclusion in SOPs.
Using this correlation chart, the optimal injection rate can be quickly determined according to raw water turbidity.
Basic training of chlorine consumption analysis
On February 7th-9th, 2022, practical training on Chlorine Consumption Analysis was conducted for KUKL staff at the Mahankalchaur Central Laboratory.
The purpose of this training is to learn how the residual chlorine in treated water injected with chlorine decreases over time.
This is the first experience for KUKL to measure changes in the concentration of residual chlorine. By mastering this technique, it will be possible to determine the appropriate chlorine dosage rate at WTP, taking into account the time it takes to reach the customer's water tap.
Water Quality Analysis
This project will enhance the water quality analysis capacity of KUKL staff providing turbidity meters and residual chlorine meters to all KUKL branches and instructing them in field water quality testing techniques.
In addition, Pocket-type pH/EC Meter was provided to the KUKL's laboratories.
O&M Training of Water Treatment Plant
When a lot of water from the new Sundarijal WTP is supplied to Kathmandu, it will be mixed with treated water from other WTPs in the distribution network. In that case, even if the drinking water quality value improves, the water quality control issues that were originally faced in the existing WTPs may not become apparent.
This project aims to improve the water treatment procedure in the principal WTPs operated by KUKL through On-the-Job Training in accordance with Standard Operating Procesure (SOP).
- Mahankalchaur WTP (started in June 2022 and on-going):
- Training by Resource Person selected from KUKL staff:
- New Sundarijal WTP (to be started in 2023)
Water Quality Monitoring by KUKL Branch Office
The project uses water quality testing equipment provided to KUKL branches to assist the branch staff themselves in conducting regular water quality testing in their water distribution network.
Currentry KUKL has started regular monitoring basing on SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). The sites to be monitored by each branch office and their sampling plans are as follows:
